Beginning in January 2025, Medicare beneficiaries with Part D can opt in for the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan (MPPP).

Medicare Part D enrollees and Medicare Advantage (MA) plans enrollees with frug coverage will have the option to spread out the costs of their prescription drugs over the calendar year. This eliminates the burden on individuals with high Rx costs of paying the total out-of-pocket cost upfront.

During the Medicare Open Enrollment, Oct. 15 – Dec. 7, there will be the opportunity to opt in for MPPP for the 2025 plan year with Part D or MA insurer. Opting in will be available throughout the year by contacting Part D and MA plan providers directly.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) is in the process of working with providers of Part D and MA plans to develop a mechanism that will allow pharmacies to notify customers who may be likely to benefit from MPPP. The pharmacy can in turn educate them about the program at the pharmacy counter when picking up their prescriptions.

A beneficiary can elect to disenroll from the program at any time. However they will still be billed by their plan and responsible for continuing to make monthly payments towards any remaining balance with their plan.
